The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) revealed early last month that East Timor celebrated the opening of its Central Post Office in the capital city of Dili on Jun. 9, its ceremony attended by the country’s top officials including Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, KOICA personnel and some 100 other locals.
In his congratulatory speech, Prime Minister Gusmao expressed gratitude to Korea for helping to establish a central post office in the capital city, as well as having shown unwavering support for the country’s independence in the past (Korea built an independence Hall in East Timor in 2003). He praised Korea’s efforts to help construct basic infrastructure of the country, thus bringing people together. East Timor became independent from Indonesia in May 2002.
KOICA President Park Dae-won said he too was glad to share the Korean experience of rebuilding the nation and called for the government’s support for the growth of the new post office.
KOICA injected 2 million dollars to build a two-story post office on 3,900 square meters of land provided by the government of East Timor in 2008, in line with East Timor’s request. The new office was also equipped with modern IT facilities.
“The establishment of a central post office that has a modernized system for accepting, sorting, and transporting letters and packages will help improve the efficiency of the post office and the administrative procedures of the government, making it possible for the country to pursue better growth,” said one of the KOICA official
